DESCRIPTION:

Condition – 7.5/10. This piece of playable history has made it through the years in great condition!

While Ludwig’s Super Classic had existed before 76, this is the year Ludwig revitalised the formula for these outfits with 6ply Maple Poplar hybrid shells, thus creating a set of drums that would go on to define the sound of a decade! Nowadays Maple & Poplar hybrid shells have become the go-to for brands looking to recapture the sonic palette of yesteryear, a la the Gretsch Broadkaster and Ludwig’s own Legacy Maple series.

This Ludwig Super Classic has also made it through the years in great condition! It’s badges all look stellar and haven’t caught or lipped up, its shells have truly minimal wear to their sleek black cortez finish, and their is only a handful of very minor dinks across all drums. We believe the batter side bass hoop may have been partially repainted(see pics). Please also note there are some marks inside the bass drum near its port hole, and a cluster of drilled holes on the floor tom that have been taped over, please see pictures for more info on this!

We’ve identified this shell pack as being from 1977. It’s serial number narrows production time down to between 77 and 78, however, this shell packs pointy edged badges were phased out for a design with more rounded edges by 1978. While you can also count the 6 plies of Maple and Poplar in each shell, their clear lacquered interior wasn’t used for pre 76 Mahogany kits, as Ludwig would only move away from painting the inside of their Super Classic shells with the switch to maple and poplar shells!
