Make Waves With The NEW Yamaha DTX8 & 10 Electronic Drum Kits!

The year 2020 saw the release of Yamahas DTX6 Electronic Drum Kits. One year on, and Yamaha have announced their newest offering in high-end Electronics in the form of the DTX8 and the DTX10 – That’s right, Yamaha are doing mesh heads as well now! Here’s all the details…

Yamaha DTX 8 Series

Let’s firstly discuss the DTX8, as there’s a lot of familiarity to the DTX6. It uses the same DTX-Pro module, RS8 rack system and KP-90 Bass drum pad but is available in two different incarnations: DTX8K-M (Mesh) and DTX8K-X (TCS).

Both versions of the DTX8 feature the new Birch-Ply shell made in Yamahas Recording Custom factory and are fitted with absolute Lugs, making the gap between Electronic and Acoustic drums even shorter! The shells come in two different finishes: Real Wood & Black Forest, both of which are available for the DTX8K-X, and the DTX8K-M, the new MESH-HEAD Yamaha electronic kit…

DTX8K-M features Yamaha’s new 2-ply Mesh-head pads. Like other mesh-head pads on the market, these pads are tunable to allow for optimum feel and response to really personalise the playing experience. The mesh heads are easily replaceable and compatible with your preferred brand of mesh drumhead should you decide to swap it out or need a replacement further down the line.

DTX8 comes with the same DTX-PRO module, and as such allows for the same fantastic features built within. I won’t spend too much time going over the features of the DTX-PRO module, but here’s where you can learn more about it. The DTX10 however, raises the bar even FURTHER

DTX8K-M (featuring Cherrise Osei)

DTX8K-X (featuring Victoria Smith)

Yamaha DTX 10

Much like the DTX8, the DTX10 comes in two variations: DTX10K-M & DTX10K-X, respectively. It features the same Birch-Ply shells and hardware found in the DTX8 range, with more advanced pad variation included. One such example is the introduction of the new PCY175 17in 3-Zone Ride Cymbal Pad, along with the new RS10-HXR Rack, which is essentially like Yamahas Hex Rack for acoustic drums, only on STEROIDS.

Other key areas for differences continue with the KP128 Kick pad, which closely resembles a real Yamaha bass drum and is made from the same Birch shell as the tom and snare pads. The snare pad has also had an upgrade in the form of an XP125SD 2-Zone Snare Pad, available in both TCS and Mesh versions. The elephant in the room is the seriously beefed-up DTX-PROX Module, and it’s SERIOUSLY worth checking out…

DTX PRO-X MODULE

The DTX-PROX Module carries a lot of the same features found in the revolutionary DTX-PRO Module, with expanded and game-changing additions. It offers completely unique audio quality, with new samples recorded for the module in some of Europe’s best studios. These sounds can be amplified utilising a complement of studio effects, allowing for each sound to be personalised for your precise needs!

In addition to the 700+ internal sounds, the PROX module offers scope to include up to 1,000 of your own, and with up to 10 outputs available, it makes this module a serious contender for the home recording suite of the year!

The DTX-PRO & PROX modules offer the exclusive Kit Modifier Knobs, located on the face of the module. These allow the user to adjust how the kit sounds in real-time, utilising room Ambience, Compression in addition to any other effect you so desire. Another exciting new capability of the PROX module is Bluetooth capability. It’s the first Yamaha module to allow for wireless connection to other decides such as a smartphone for music.

Another extremely exciting feature of this module is Guide Audio – for when you want to use backing tracks live but don’t want a computer on stage. Once you’ve prepared your backing tracks, the module takes care of the rest for you and allows you to balance your mix without changing the overall master volume and send it to various other folks on stage.

Perhaps the most unique feature is Live Set – This allows the module to generate click tracks for stereo audio files on USB drives and send the click via the headphone output for the drummer. In English, it means you don’t need to worry about creating a click track from your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for the backing track you wish to use, the module does it FOR you. GAME. CHANGED. From there, you’re about to route pad outputs to different individual outputs for live or studio use. It’s a VERY powerful module.

Yamaha DTX10K-X (featuring Larnell Lewis)

Yamaha DTX10K-M (featuring Duayne Sanford)

Yamaha’s new DTX8 & 10 range have raised the bar again in terms of how an electronic kit should function, making the transition from electronic to acoustic drums even more streamlined.

We have the DTX8K-M, DTX8K-X, DTX10K-M and DTX10K-X available now, so check them out and see which one you think will be the perfect fit for you!

5 Times Thomas Lang Was A MACHINE!!!

Happy Birthday, Thomas Lang!

For those who don’t already know, Thomas Lang is an Austrian drummer residing in Los Angeles, California. If you’ve ever watched The Terminator, he’s basically the drumming equivelant of Arnold Swartznigger in that movie…but with a bit more personality and 100% more stick tricks. We held Thomas in clinic circa 2014 in Glasgow and he blew everyone away with his technical proficiancy behind the drums, so to mark his special day we gathered 5 of our favourite moments from “The Druminator” himself!

Thomas Lang – Best Drum Solo Of The World

This is probably how most of you got your introduction to Thomas Lang. He not only knows how to work a drum kit, but he knows how to effortless work a crowd, too!

Thomas Lang Plays “Time” on PDP Concept Series Set Up

I guess you could say, Thomas Lang is really good at playing…TIME (see what we did there?!)

Thomas Lang: “Mallory” Performance

Fun fact: Thomas filmed this before his audition for Freddie in the film School Of Rock, hense the outfit. I guess he didn’t realise the band had to be made from kids. He’d be a pretty rad Dewey Finn, though…

Thomas Lang playing “Finish Line” from the album “ProgPop”

You’ll absolutely benefit from watching this video five times and focus on each one of the cameras individually. The foot cam alone is INSANE!!

Thomas Lang “Sober” – Meinl Cymbals

Pardon the pun, but in this video Thomas Lang is as tight as a drum!!! His independence between all his limbs is so fluid that you’d think he has a thousand of them!

Thomas is certainly one of the greatest of our time! He’s super fluid and expressive while maintaining a cool, collected demeanor. I was first introduced to Thomas Lang in 2007, and he’s only become more incredible as the years have passed. We hope he has a fantastic birthday!

What is your favourite Thomas Lang performance?

5 Times Joey Jordison Was The Greatest!

RIP, Joey Jordison

Joey Jordison is one of the most influential drummers of our time. As one of the founding members of metal band Slipknot, Joey inspired a generation of drummers to pick up sticks for the first time with his incredible technical ability and unmatchable power and speed. Another disasterous blow to the drumming industry, so we picked out 5 times Joey was simply the GREATEST!

Slipknot – Joey Jordison Drum cam – Disasterpiece [Live at London 2002]

People complain about wearing masks going into shops, but Slipknot were doing it before it was the law…and playing CRAZY fast metal music while doing it! Here’s Disasterpiece from London 2002, all from Joeys drum cam!

Korn ft. Joey Jordison – Blind [Live at Rock am Ring 2007]

It wasn’t unlike Joey to be a sideman/stand-in from time to time, and his performance with Korn in 2007 proves Joey doesn’t need to hide behind a mask to put on a drumming CLINIC!

Slipknot – Eyeless Live

Two things about this video that are sensational:

  1. Joeys speed and technical ability
  2. THAT HAIR SPIN!!

Metallica ft. Slipknot – Enter Sandman Joey Jordison

Another stand-in gig for Joey, this time with the LEGENDARY Metallica! Opinions about Lars aside, Joey absolutely made sure to stay in his lane playing this song…and did so IMPECCABLY.

Joey Jordison Drum Solo [LIVE]

It’s one thing to perform a drum solo infront of a massive crowd, it’s another entirely to do it while your drum riser is MOVING!! This shows not only that Joey is a phenomenal drummer, but also he’s an incredible showman!

Joey will go down in drumming history as one of the most expressive, powerful and influential drummers of all time, he’ll be deeply missed by drummers and Slipknot fans alike. He’ll be sorely missed.

What is your favourite Joey Jordison performance?

5 Times Roger Taylor Was The KING Of Queen!

Happy Birthday, Roger Taylor!

If you’ve lived under a rock for the last FOREVER, Roger is one quarter of British band Queen. Perhaps one of the greatest bands of all time known for such MASSIVE songs like Don’t Stop Me Now, We Are The Champions & Bohemian Rhapsody. Iconic songs from an iconic band, and Rogers drum parts are the key foundation to what makes those songs exciting to listen to, and exciting to play as a drummer.

So, we’ve gathered together five of Rogers finest drumming moments!

Brian May/Roger Taylor Guitar and Drum Jam – We Are The Champions [2020]

One of the best things to come out of 2020 was this light-hearted jam between two life long friends, playing one of the greatest songs of all time! Roger proves that with age comes wisdom and doesn’t miss a beat…and he’s doing his best Kenny Aronoff impression with those shades!

Bohemian Rhapsody (Live) (HD) – Axl Rose / Elton John / Queen

The ICONIC Bohemian Rhapsody performed by an all-star cast of Elton John, Axl Rose, Brian May, Roger Taylor and others from 1992. This one is actually worth watching twice, once for the legendary cameos and twice for the drum part. Roger is absolutely SOLID here!

Fun fact: This is video evidence of Axl Rose actually being ON TIME for a performance!

Foo Fighters + Roger Taylor – Under Pressure (Super Saturday Night 2019)

It’s one thing to meet your heroes, it’s a whole different thing to perform WITH them. That’s what Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters gets the honour of doing here. Excuse the multiple F-Bombs, but if you were getting the chance to perform with your idol… you’d probably be the same!

Roger Taylor – Live at Wembley 1986

Fancy watching 19 minutes and 34 seconds of Roger in his prime performing four of the most legendary Queen songs of all time? We thought you might. Enjoy!

Queen – Rodger Taylor Drum Solo [Rock Montreal 1981]

When push comes to shove, Roger Taylor can absolutely RIP on stage! Here’s his drum solo from 1981. Absolutely SENSATIONAL!

For many of us, Roger is the reason we picked up the sticks in the first place. He’s a true drumming icon forever etched in rock drumming history!

What is your favourite Roger Taylor performance? Let us know down below!

Our FIVE Favourite Stewart Copeland Moments!

Happy Birthday, Stewart Copeland!

The Klark Kent of the drumming world is another year older. We wonder if he got his birthday Message in a Bottle…get it? Stewart Copeland isn’t just known for making drum gloves cool, he was also one third of english rock band, The Police. Like Travis Barker, Questlove, and Will Ferrell…I mean, Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland belongs to the minority of drummers recognised by even non-drummers. He’s THAT famous. Not only is he a phenomenal drummer, but he’s also an exceptionally gifted composer with noteable composition work for TV Shows, Movies and Video Games. So, we picked out 5 favourite Stewart Copeland moments!

The Police ~ Message in a Bottle ~ Synchronicity Concert [1983]

Perhaps the greatest recording of Message In A Bottle ever? Drumming wise, at least. Stewart is just on another LEVEL in this clip!

Side note; Is Sting dressed like The Ultimate Warrior on purpose, or was it just the fashion in the 80’s?

Stewart Copelands Approach To Backbeats

His fantastic, but also unconvetional in his approach to the drums. This video perhaps sums up perfectly the importance of playing the right rhythms for the SONG – not just a cool drum part.

The Police – So Lonely 2008 Live

Back to The Police now, and thankfully Sting has ditched his glad-rags while Stewart dons the headband of triumph! You can really see how much Stewarts playing has matured since the 80’s here – SUPER tight!

Stewart Copeland – Drum Solo – David Letterman 2011

Nothing of note to mention here. Just 3 and a half minutes of Stewart Copeland RIPPING!

Primus & Stewart Copeland at the Sacred Grove

When I think of the band Primus, I don’t instinctively think of Stewart Copeland. However, those are two worlds that collide in this video. Stewart isn’t behind kit in this video, but manning the percussion station! This song won’t be to everyones taste. At least it’s Gluten-Free…

Stewart will be forever etched into drumming royality, with his influnce on the drumming world shining through various young and up and coming drummers alike. Just don’t play the Roxanne drinking game with him…

Which performance from Stewart is your favourite? Let us know down below!
