Drummers Only Day Out 2018

[ux_image id=”62467″]

Sunday May 27th 2018 saw the inaugural Drummers Only Day Out commence in the glory of the Glasgow University Union debating chamber. The sun was shining and drummers flocked in their droves to come see a collection of fine artists playing as well as you expect them to.

The show was kicked off in spectacular fashion with legendary Sonor artists – The Drumbassadors. An absolutely amazing display of tecnique, musicality, chops, groove, flair and just about EVERYTHING you’d expect from drummers of this caliber. They rocked their set on a matching pair or Sonor Vintage series kits in Red Oyster – 22, 10, 14 and 16 with matching snare drums and a whole array of beautful Paiste cymbals.

Their set was designed around pieces that they had composed and some improvised pieces that they each seemed to just telepathically anticipate what the other was going to play.

They closed their set with a drum and vocal piece that let them display stunning independence and create a tremendous atmosphere – a great opening to the show!

Next up on the bill was local hero Ali Richardson. Ali is making a really strong name for himself in the metal scene with bands such as Bleed From Within, Savage Messiah and Sylosis. Straddling a monster Yamaha Live Custom and Sabian set up, Ali quickly showed the audience why he’s becoming the go to guy for Metal. He played with amazing precision, power and groove and alighted people to a style of music that was perhaps not considered before.
He was easily given the best Q and A of the day – with the home crowd desperate to find out how and why he plays certain things and he handled it all with articulation and thoughtful consideration. It became clear very quickly that Ali has it all dialled in and nothing is left to chance or out of place.

Blasting his way through tracks by all 3 bands he plays for, he received a rousing reception from his full house. Tremendously deserved!

A quick break let people catch their breath and sample the awesome merchandise brought for them to see from companies such as Zildjian, Sabian, Vater, Evans and Promark with Vater Extended Play sticks and Evans EMAD UV1 heads making their debut up north.

After that, the one and only Adam Marcello was up.

No stranger to pop music, Adam has been the driving force behind Katy Perry for pretty much her entire career. He has toured all over the world with her and served as her MD. He was rocking a hybrid set up for the day – behind a Q Drums kit and a simple, yet highly effective Roland set up. An SPD-SX, KT-10, some triggers and running Ableton through a laptop, his focus was electronics and their use in pop music today. He faithfully recreated all the album parts for all the Perry tunes he played and it was quite a feat to behold.

His clinic was indeed a hybrid of old and new with the focus being on electronics while still being played on full acoustic kit. Ridiculously informative and well explained despite being highly technical – all the while being massivley entertaining.

Closing the show was none other than the German superstar Anika Nilles. From YouTube star to the front cover of Modern Drummer, there has never been any doubt in Anika’s ability and she showed that in tremendous fashion to the eager crowd.

She presented a collection of tunes from her band Nevell and display her renowned precision, groove, ridiculous facility and control on a beautiful Tama Star Bubinga with SLP Fat Spurce and Steel snares along with a beautiful collection of Meinl Byzance cymbals.

Her Q&A session was answered with the same articulation as her playing, even demoing a rhythm cycle exercise that taught her control of her coveted quintuplet grooves and fills.

Not one to disappoint the crowd, she finished with her fan favourites ‘Wild Boy’ and ‘Alter Ego’ to a thunderous reception from the crowd.

Overall, the first of the Drummers Only Day Out shows was a massive hit. A repsonive and awesome crowd, incredibly talented artists showcasing all that is good about drumming and the community at large and some great merchandise and gear to look at, all tied together to create a really successful show and one that we aim to repeat again with the same success. We look forward to seeing you there!
