Presenting the latest modern development from Tama drums: The Starclassic Walnut/Birch kit. What makes THIS kit different from the Starclassic kits yer granny played? Let me tell ye…
The new Starclassic kits by Tama for 2019 are made from a blend of Walnut and Birch, replacing their birch/bubinga kits to produce an incredible blend of two very different woods. Walnut typically produces a lot of mid-to-low end frequencies making birch the perfect pairing opening these drums up to incredible high end projection and attack. Make no mistake, these drums still sound distinctly Tama. An EVOLVED Tama, if you will. WhatI personally enjoy about them is their build quality. Every attention to detail is taken care of leaving no stone left unturned, which is especially true in the case of the Starclassic Walnut/Birch. So what’s the spec?
The rack and floor tom shells are 6mm thick made from 4ply European Birch with 2 inner ply of American Black Walnut. The bass drum is 8mm with 5ply of European Birch and 2 inner ply of American Black Walnut allowing a full range of tone. The shells contain an inside lacquer which allows the shells to produce precise clear tone and focused overall sound.Other features on this kit include the Star-Cast mounting system, die-cast hoops, Starclassic lugs and the fan favourite quick-lock tom brackets. As for heads…I wouldn’t worry too much about it as this kit comes fitted with Evans heads right oot the box!
With some new wood comes new FINISHES. They’ve paired the Walnut/Birch up in an array of lacquers, one of which I got to see with my own eyes (and camera!). Phantasm Oyster. Quite polarizing for some, but personally I love it! I think it really sets off some incredible sounding drums perfectly. It’s also available in a gorgeous Arctic Blue Oyster featured on Tama’s website. To be honest no matter what finish you choose you’ll be satisfied by the sound of these drums alone. They look and sound incredible. We’ll let you know when this kit is available but in the mean time, check out our video of it!

I’ve noticed that the 5 Tama 2 up 1 down Starclassic phantoms Oyster kit has the 2 Tom’s mounted on bass drum, where as the 2 up 2 down, the 2 Tom’s are mounted on stands. Is it possible to have the 2 up 2 down kit with the rack Tom’s on the bass drum rather than stands and if so what is the price?
